COMMANDS
- or - How the 'ell do ya' do that?

This is not an exhaustive list of all the commands used in The Eternal City, but it
should well cover all the basics you'll need.

Combat Commands

approach <target> - moves you to within striking distance of your target. Beware, this is a dead giveaway that you intend to attack.
attack <target> - if you are wielding a weapon, this command will cause you to take a swing at your target. However, this is a basic attack and does not utilize any specific manuveurs you may have learned.
passive - this toggles your "passive" mode on or off. Places your character in a state that will allow others to manipulate you in various physical ways. Other characters will be able to move you, strip you of equipment, etc. It's main use for you is surrendering to others (especially the constables, very highly recommended if the connies are trying to arrest you).
retreat - causes your character to attempt to back out of a fight. Good if you are losing or about to collapse from exhaustion, etc. Beware, retreating takes a few seconds and some creatures are quick enough that they may re-engage before you can get away.
(You can also use the command string retreat <direction> to "jump" into an adjacent area when you retreat. Very useful in escape exceptionally aggressive opponents.)
scan <direction> - actually a command intended for archers to identify targets that are out of sight (not in the same area). Everyone can use it, though, to look for targets that are an area or more away.
wield <weapon> - causes you to ready your weapon for combat. You must wield a weapon before you can attack with it.
You can now train up to a certain level.  This will allow you to train without
revealing your real skill, or to restrict the number of lessons learned by
your pupil.
teach <skill> to <character> - Used to teach others characters the skills you know. You also specify to what level you are willing to teach.
For example: teach <skill> to <level> (Example: teach swords slash to 30)

practice -
toggles on and off your "practice" mode. This will allow you to strike a target without doing any damage. Good for "sparring" with other players in weapons practice. If you are not in practice mode when you spare, you are doing damage to your sparring partner. Characters have died that way.
fight <level (see below)> - When sparring, you can choose whether or not to fight using your full strength. Example  fight toyingly,
    fight all-out
    fight seriously
    fight half-serious
    fight barely serious
    fight toyingly
Fighting all-out will cause you to engage in combat with everything you have. The other options will reduce the rank bonus of your offensive and defensive skills by a certain fraction.  Type fight on its own to see your current mode or to review your options.

@help - accesses the help files from the welcome area.

' or say - causes your character to make a statement that can be heard by everyone in the same area.
: or emote <text> - causes a statement to be made about your character that you can determine. For example, if a player name Calabus typed: <emote scratches his head> it will cause everyone in the same area to see the message: <Calabus scratches his head.> Remember to add the period to the end of the emote, the game won't do it for you.
%
or think  <text> - if you have your toggle-think toggled "on" then this command will broadcast your thoughts to everyone else in the game who has their toggle-think turned on as well.

mutter  <text> - causes your character to mutter something about (whatever). For example, if a player name Dionysus typed: <mutter damned connies> it will cause everyone in the same area to see the message: <Dionysus mutters something about damned connies>

yell <text> - same as the ' or say command except that everyone in your area, and in as many as one or two areas away, can hear what you yelled.

Color Coding

From the welcome area you can cause certain color changes to the interface that will make different types of information from the game more easily assimilated.
From the welcome area, follow these steps:
@menu - This will bring up the account functions menu. From there choose P for preferences
This will give the following choices:
[C] Colorize Think Output [on/off] - This will cause all "thoughts" you recieve from the ingame think-net to be colored blue.
[H] Set Room Description Highlight Colors - Allows you to choose which color scheme to use for "room" descriptions.
[M] Activate the Macro Bar [on/off] - As described in "the bar" section on the previous page, this allows you to set your own macro buttons on the tool bar.
 [T] Sidebar Tips [on/off] -
Turns on or off the tips that appear in the sidebar of the java applet.
[A] Java Client Audio [on/off] - Want to hear it when you, or someone else, knocks on a door? This little features turn on/off the game audios. Not much to it just yet, but I bet the GM's have plans for it.
[Q] Colorized Combat Echoes [on/off] - Causes all attack messages (when someone or something attacks your character) to appear in red and your attacks in purple. Very handy.
[B] Colorized Unbusy Echo [on/off] - Sets the "You are no longer busy" message to gold color.
